Catalan tasting menu done right — wine program, not so much

Teòric Taverna is modern Catalan cooking with old roots: seasonal, local-minded, and built around a tasting-menu flow that leans into “mar i muntanya” instincts without turning it into folklore. The kitchen shows real control—clean technique, good product, and a calm confidence that makes the whole menu feel cohesive instead of like a highlight reel. For what you get, the value is genuinely strong; it’s the kind of tasting menu that makes us feel like we’ve outsmarted Barcelona for lunch or an early dinner.

The only piece that doesn’t keep pace is the wine. For a place this contemporary, the selection feels oddly underwhelming—more functional than exciting—so the food ends up carrying the night alone. Nothing is “wrong,” but we leave wishing the bottles had the same point of view as the plates.

Still, we’d go back. The cooking is the real deal, and the fix is simple: give the wine the same ambition
