An institution that deserves a refresh
Botafumeiro is classic Barcelona marisquería: Galician-leaning seafood and Mediterranean staples, built around shellfish platters, wild fish, rice dishes, and that old-school belief that great product is the whole point. It’s been an institution for decades, and you can feel the weight of it the moment you sit down
And that’s exactly why we find it slightly frustrating. If Via Veneto feels timeless, Botafumeiro feels tired. The room and the overall setting are asking for a full update—because the prices are undeniably high, and the environment no longer matches the premium ticket
The kitchen, to be fair, still plays its game well: straightforward seafood cooking that relies on freshness, grill and plancha confidence, and a menu that knows its classics. But at this level, “being an institution” isn’t enough; the experience has to feel as cared for as the plate
