Assalto

Assalto: A Wine-Lined Beauty Still Searching for a Signature

Assalto began life as a wine bar and, like so many good nights in Barcelona, it gradually turned into something more like a restaurant—one that wants to feed you as convincingly as it can pour you. The space is undeniably seductive: a handsome room with bottles everywhere, the kind of décor that makes you feel you’ve stepped inside a cellar’s daydream. You’re inclined to trust it before you’ve even ordered.

And yet the meal can feel curiously familiar. The food is good, competently executed, and designed to please, but the menu often reads like a greatest-hits compilation of the city’s current small-plate vocabulary. It’s not that anything is wrong; it’s that too little feels personal. With a setting this striking—and a premise this promising—you want a stronger point of view, a little more risk, a clearer personality on the plate.

Service is warm, the atmosphere inviting, and the bones of the place are excellent. Assalto is already enjoyable; it just deserves to be unmistakable.
