On the twenty-fifth of November, Michelin gave Mont Bar its second star, one of three awarded in Barcelona that night alongside Enigma and Aleia, and the Spanish press reached for the same phrase: the first bar to do it. That framing is more than a headline. What Iván Castro built out of a corner tavern, and what Fran Agudo now cooks in it, has always run on the premise that ambition and ease can share a room — that you can serve stracciatella with sea urchin and black truffle, a terrine of wagyu and foie, a Bresse pigeon done two ways, and still have somebody greet you like a neighbor. Everything we said a year ago has been ratified by an institution not known for rewarding informality. The technique is precise where it counts, in the crisps and emulsions and temperature control, and invisible everywhere else. The cellar is deep and — the test this guide keeps applying and most rooms keep failing — the guidance is offered without condescension. Our one reservation stands and has probably gotten worse: it is expensive, and the second star will not have helped. It is also, still, one of the warmest rooms in Barcelona. Two stars, no starch. Extraordinary.

The 2025 Review
A Jewel Box of Serious Cooking (and Seriously Good Bottles)
Mont Bar has the rare talent of feeling like a neighborhood hideaway while cooking with the focus of a destination address. The room is downright gorgeous—warm, intimate, and designed for lingering—yet it never tips into preciousness. From the first hello, the service lands in that sweet spot: friendly, attentive, and quietly confident, as if everyone is rooting for your night to go well.
The food plays in the terrain between tapas and tasting-menu precision: small plates that arrive with a sense of narrative, seasonal logic, and the occasional wink. There’s a noticeable technical polish—crisps, emulsions, careful temperatures—but the dishes don’t feel like demonstrations. They feel like dinner.
And then there’s the wine: a deep, well-curated selection that invites both safe choices and small leaps of faith, with staff who can guide without lecturing. Yes, the price can feel a touch elevated. Still, for beauty, comfort, and pleasure per square meter, Mont Bar earns its reputation.
